He pioneered the discovery that classical neurotransmitters (monoamines) direct immune cell function and that an immune cell-derived inflammatory mediator (tumor necrosis factor, TNF) directs brain neuron function.
His career spans over 30 years of research experience in neurobiology, pharmacology, and molecular immunology. Through the marriage of related fields, He developed his novel, flourishing research program at the University at Buffalo.
